Machinery Regulation 2027: what changes on 20 January 2027
Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 as corrected and Decision (EU) 2026/2015, read in the Official Journal on 17 October 2026
On 20 January 2027 the Machinery Regulation applies and Directive 2006/42/EC is repealed. The Directive's list of harmonised standards ends the same day, and none is cited under the Regulation yet. That matters most for Annex I Part B machines, whose self-assessment depends on those standards.
- Who it applies to
- Manufacturers and importers of machinery and related products, and above all makers of the 19 categories in Annex I Part B who self-certify today.
- The dates
- From 20 January 2027, for every unit placed on the market. Units placed on the market before then may still be made available.
- The one thing to do
- Pick your Annex I category and the day the unit is placed on the market to see which route is open to you.
Your machine, before and from 20 January 2027
Where Annex I lists the machine and when the unit is placed on the market decide it. The answer is read from the Regulation as corrected and Decision (EU) 2026/2015. Nothing you pick leaves this page. If you do not know which part names your category, both lists are on the Machinery Regulation page, in the Annex's own wording.
Answer both to see the route.

Questions about 20 January 2027
When does the Machinery Regulation apply?
From 20 January 2027. The Regulation as first printed said 14 January 2027 in every language version. A corrigendum in the Journal soon after publication moved each of its dates by six days, so pages copying the original are six days early.
Are there harmonised standards under the Machinery Regulation?
Not yet, read on 17 October 2026. The standards in the Journal are cited under the Directive, and Decision (EU) 2026/2015 repeals that list from 20 January 2027, the day the Directive is repealed.
Can an Annex I Part B machine still be self-certified?
Only with harmonised standards or common specifications covering all the relevant essential health and safety requirements (Article 25(3)). None is cited under the Regulation, so unless a list appears, units placed from 20 January 2027 need a notified body.
What happens to machines already on the market?
A unit placed on the market under the Directive before 20 January 2027 may still be made available after it (Article 52(1)). The day counts per unit, and one placed from 20 January 2027 follows the Regulation.
Do EC type-examination certificates stay valid?
Yes. Certificates and approval decisions issued under Article 12 of the Directive remain valid until they expire (Article 52(2)).
Does anything change for machines not in Annex I?
The route does not: internal production control, signed by you (Article 25(4)). What you build to does, since the Regulation's requirements replace the Directive's for every unit placed from 20 January 2027.
